History

Upon initiative of the National Council of Rectors (CONARE) the proposed Law on Private Universities was presented in compliance with the agreement of that Council in its Session of October 31, 1979, with the objective of normalizing the functioning of Private Higher Education Institution.
In this way, by means of Law No. 6693 of November 27, 1981 published in the Official Gazette, No. 243, of December 21, 1981 the National Council for Private Universities and Higher Education (CONESUP), was created as an authority attached to the Ministry of Public Education in charge of regulating and supervising Private Universities, which by law corresponds to it.
